Coincidences & Connections - Capital City & Solar Saturday
I wrote about Papas Fritas a few days ago. This week, I receive a copy of Capital City's Am I Invisible from mundanesounds. The coincidence is too obvious - someone is clearly watching me. Consider:
Both bands have a distinctive Bostonian indie-rock/pop sensibility, which loosely translates as a blend of retro pop with more current sounds. When it's done well, it's better than either influence. And it would sound so good on the border radio.
C.C. singer/songwriter Geech Sorensen was a college friend of Keith Gendel - current Solar Saturday and past Papas Fritas bassist. Also, pal of mine, Orrin (who really should have a website, but is too busy living la vida loca, al la LA, stylee) Anderson recorded the C.C. demo reel. If that isn't enough of the C&C to convince me, Am I Invisible was recorded at Fort Apache - a place that gets such an amazing sound! Capital City is worth checking out and watching how they develop.
Oh and I see from the Solar Saturday website, they've been making some changes, as part of their relocation from Boston to Echo Park, CA. They are now called 'The Faraway Places' and have morphed into a "space glamrock soul band." Sounds interesting. Maybe something along the lines of Roger Mannings' Imperial Drag/Moog Cookbook, post Jellyfish, pre Beck collaborator, phase?
